FYI, Pellet Stoves

Was talking with a guy today.

2200 sq ft. Was spending 1300 fiat to heat with oil.

Switched to corn/wood pellet dual fuel heater with blower in the living room of all places. Direct vent out the sidewall.

Anyway, total heat cost this year was <450, as he still had some left of the 3 tons corn he bought at 176/ton.

He said moisture content had to be 11% or under. Farmers are required to bring it in at 11-14%. So it could be too wet for the burner if at max allowable. He said you can buy shells to cure this. A cup of shells per load, and it resolves the excess moisture issue.

Queried him on the liv room arrangement. Stated the bedrooms, etc were cooler, but if you wanted more heat back there, just open the doors. Also stated he used to wear sweaters, now it is tshirts.

Radiant heat is so much different from forced air types.

He said a friend of his had one in the basement, and the floors throughout the house are toasty.

I would prefer some version of that, rather than on the main level.

FYI, and it is all just one guy talking.

I heard today by some talking head, that if all of the US corn production went to ethanol, it would only do about 1.5m barrels per day, or less than 6% of our daily usage.

So this quaint little idea of using corn for heat and transport fuels is an alternative that nips at the monster, but will never be a real threat.

Corn can bring unwanted bugs and the wood pillets have gone up in price due the demand of these products. Nevertheless, a wonderful energy saving idea, however, I still prefer the old wood stoves or the large outdoor stove houses. I own natural gas stocks, since I produce so much myself, so I discourage the use of alternative heating appliances. :signs14:

My dimwitted redneck cousin Bill has one of those outdoor wood furnaces, he burns corn, stalks and all in it; then again he grows his own.
